Soil Blocking 101

Soil blocking is a way of starting seeds in small, free-standing cubes of compressed soil instead of plastic cell trays. Each block’s open sides air-prune the roots, so seedlings grow dense, healthy rootballs — and transplant into the garden almost without noticing the move.
If you’ve ever tipped a seedling out of a plug tray and found a pale tangle of roots circling the bottom, you’ve met the problem soil blocking solves. In a plastic cell, a root that reaches the wall keeps going — around and around — until the plant is root-bound and sulks for a week after transplanting.

How does a soil block work?
A blocker presses very wet soil mix into firm cubes, each with a small dimple on top for the seed. The blocks stand on their own in a tray — no pot, no cell, no plastic. When a growing root reaches the open edge of a block, the plant responds by branching inward instead of circling.
